FAQ Friday: Does Medicare cover allergy shots?
Allergies are the 6th leading cause of chronic illness in the U.S. and more than 50 million Americans suffer from allergies each year. Medicare does not cover allergy shots. However, Medicare Part B can cover certain illnesses caused by allergies. Asthma is one such condition. Medicare Part B might cover nebulizers and certain medications that treat asthma, as well as specific diagnostic tests.
Most of the time Medicare will not cover allergy medications, should your healthcare provider prescribe one but if you have a Part D drug plan, it may cover certain allergy medications. Before choosing a Part D drug plan, you should check the plan’s formulary to make sure that your allergy medications are covered.
